We’re collaborating with Pretty Shady this summer to make sure Your Time In The Sun is safe this summer. Head over here for more information.

It’s a stereotype universally acknowledged that fashion industry types wear head-to-toe black all day every day, and, whether it’s Suzy Menkes describing the fashion editors who swoop into New York Fashion Week as crows (and their opposites, the fashion bloggers, as peacocks), or us in the Catalogue offices wearing black largely so stains from eating our lunches at our desks aren’t visible, it’s a pretty solid observation.

It’s similarly true that fashion is part of the broader cultural milieu, and affects and is affected by the music, artistic, and political subcultures of any moment in time, which is one of the reasons we love it so much. So when Beach Goth, a term coined to describe a particular brand of Californian garage rock, emerged, and when Beach Goth Fest, an L.A. music festival organised by Beach Goth band The Growlers, kicked off recently, it makes sense that the fashion industry would call forth the term to describe their summer sartorial inclinations.

Here, we recruited our fashion director Charlotte Agnew and two of her mates, model and student Meg and co-founder of The Ladies Network Lara, to show us their best Beach Goth, and we think they did a pretty fab (read: dark, moody, brooding) job.

Lara Vrkic:

Lara wears hat by Rag & Bone from Incu, earrings by Holly Ryan, jacket from Route 66, and pants by Mathys Sinclair.

Catalogue: Can you tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do?
Lara Vrkic: I’m 23 and the founder and curator at The Ladies Network. I’m also a mum to Hudson who is 18 months.

Catalogue: Outside of what you do, what are your interests?
Lara: I love that it’s getting warmer, I love the outdoors and exercising.

Catalogue: What are you currently reading, watching, listening to, Podcasting?
Lara: I’m having a mild instagram detox (very mild) so I’m trying to read, watch, and listen to much more. At the moment I’m reading Men Explains Things To Me by Rebecca Solnit and listening to Solange on repeat.

Catalogue: Are there any people or movements you’re particularly inspired by right now (maybe in this post-Trump world we find ourselves in)? If so, can you tell us a little bit about them?
Lara: I’m constantly inspired by the flood of women doing amazing things. The individual inspiring me most at the moment is Noni Cragg, who’s not only an incredible artist but also one of the women behind The Rough Period. The Rough Period give care packages to women living on the streets in Sydney which include sanitary and feminine hygiene products. We can get so preoccupied with what’s happening overseas that I think we tend to ignore the things we can be doing on a smaller scale to improve the lives of people doing it tough here.

Catalogue: It’s finally summer! If you were to describe The Quintessential Aussie Summer, what would you say?
Lara: Pasting your face with sunscreen in the morning, getting supplies at About Life and heading to a secret beach in the Eastern Suburbs. I love in summer when you go swimming and the air dries you almost instantly. Afternoon naps make a comeback for me as do early dinners and swatting flies. I also love camping. There’s lots to love about summer in Australia – we are so lucky!

Catalogue: What are you going to be getting up to this summer?
Lara: It’s the first summer Hudson is super active so I can’t wait to go on lots of weekend beach getaways, make sandcastles, and do lots of swimming.

Catalogue: You are in our beach goth shoot for Pretty Shady. How do you stay sun safe during summer?
Lara: I’m incredibly pale and cringe at how I used to treat my skin when I was younger. I apply a light sunscreen every morning regardless of what I’m getting up to and if I’m going to be in the sun I wear zinc. I’m currently shopping for a big shady hat but otherwise I’m the girl with a scarf around her head, glasses and a long sleeved top at the beach. I used to get really bummed about being pale but I’ve grown to really love it.

Catalogue: What are your recommendations for how others can stay sun safe?
Lara: I find it really shocking when I go to the beach and see people baking in the sun. There is so much research and information available about the risks of sun baking it seems crazy to me that people still do it. I think getting into a really good routine of applying sunscreen every morning is the first and easiest step. Also bringing a t-shirt to wear if the sun is too hot is a good trick. There are so many great fake tans on the market at the moment (I just tried The Base by Lara Bingle and am hooked) that we don’t need to risk our health for a little glow.

Catalogue: Outside of what you do, what are your interests?
Meg: Art, cats, eating cheese, jazz, wine, House of Hoes, pastries, documentaries, and swimming in the ocean.

Catalogue: It’s finally summer! If you were to describe The Quintessential Aussie Summer, what would you say?
Meg: Waking up early from overheating; walking to the fresh juice store below my house;  listening to music and drinking Bloody Marys; sweaty sunset hangs in the park: and, of course, swimming in the ocean.

Meg wears sunglasses from Route 66, earrings by Holly Ryan, top by Matteau from Incu, pants by Haider Ackermann from Poepke.

Catalogue: What are you going to be getting up to this summer?
Meg: I’m terrible at planning, but if you were to find me anywhere this summer it would be at, Nude: Art from the Tate collection at the Art Gallery of New South Wales or at my all time favourite band, Neurosis’ Shows in Feb 2017. I’ll probably be spending Sunday nights at Pavlova Bar (House of Mince) and the beach in between.

Catalogue: You were in our beach goth shoot for Pretty Shady. How do you stay sun safe during summer?
Meg: Wearing a large sarong is always my go to. Sometimes it’s simply too hot to be wearing clothes! Comfort and versatility is key when it comes to my wardrobe. Sarong = head scarf, dress, towel, picnic blanket, shade cloth. Perf.

Catalogue: What are your recommendations for how others can stay sun safe?
Meg: Stop caring about hat hair (not that I get any) and grab yourself a lush sun hat that makes you feel like you stepped off a James Bond movie set. Use sunscreen and keep hydrated!
