The new Adidas campaign stars a women with visible leg hair. This has triggered a bunch of men who are still very threatened by female body hair. Artist Arvida Byström has spoken out after receiving backlash for the lush leg hair she shows off in the ad. Byström took to Instagram last week to express concerns over the way the image was received.

“Me being such an abled, white, cis body with its only nonconforming feature being a lil’ leg hair,” she writes. “Literally I’ve been getting rape threats in my DM inbox. I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like to not posses all these privileges and try to exist in the world. Sending love and try to remember that not everybody has the same experiences being a person.”

Many have come out in support of Byström following this message, celebrating her representation of something that is extremely natural and normal and telling triggered guys to get TF over it. We totally agree with these sentiments but it’s also worth noting that this image is an advertisement; While Byström’s legs challenge gender norms and remind us that beauty standards are sexist and socially constructed, they also help sell a pair of shoes.

Byström addressed this conflict in another Instagram post, writing:

“Me being in an adidas campaign is great fun, it is a company I enjoy working with and that makes cool stuff, but since all companies are very integrated in our capitalistic system they are inherently non-feministic in the sense that this system is built on imperialism and that to me can’t be feministic. So even though I have hairy legs in an ad campaign I guess to me it doesn’t make me a hero of any kind and also not more of a feminist.”

The corporate cooption of feminist ideas does make us uncomfortable, but if it also makes women feel okay about visible body hair and misogynistic men feel angry, then it’s okay by us.

It’s really NBD:
