Three Beauty Trends We Reckon Will be Massive in 2017

When it comes to 2017 beauty, it seems the eighties are set to make a victorious return. This is a groundswell that we’ve been feeling in the fashion scene for some time now and, although the decade of excess typically calls to mind disastrously big hair and fluoro-coloured scrunchies, it seems that beauty’s new take on maximalism is just a little more pared back. And here’s something I never thought I’d hear myself say: I actually don’t hate it.

In fact, I’m all for the playfulness that’s being injected back into beauty now. Because in the midst of 2016’s shit storm, it somehow feels like the most appropriate way to move forward; in loud, colourful and almost childlike fashion. I suppose it wasn’t dubbed the ‘eighties power suit’ for nothing. So with big beauty now back on the agenda, we’re getting ready for all the boss babes to reclaim the power this year — and here are three of the beauty trends we reckon they’ll be wearing in the process.

1) Unexpected colour

Nowhere was the eighties influence more intensely felt than it was through the unexpected pops of colour abundant on the SS17 runways. Here, it was anything goes, as lipstick moonlighted as blush and colour pop lids came out in full force. At Nina Ricci, for example, the makeup was inspired by Bruce Weber’s photographs from the decade and resulted in glossy shades of aquamarine and tangerine. Meanwhile, Marc Jacobs’ entire show was inspired by eighties rave culture. But a particular favourite in terms of originality had to be the lipstick-bright blush that featured on models’ temples at Kenzo. Oh and the yellow eyebrows at Gucci, of course — because why not?

2) All that glitters

New York Fashion Week tends to be home to the most understated and pared back of beauty trends, but for SS17, a number of designers actually embraced all that glitters. Whether it was by way of some gold nail art at Rodarte, opalescent eyeshadow at Victoria Beckham, or full-blown glitter lips at DKNY, it’s fair to say that 2017 is all about revisiting our childhood makeup palettes. Of course, it needn’t be quite so bold as makeup artist Pat McGrath’s approach at DKNY, but even if it’s through a little shimmer of the eyelid, it seems that this is the year to have fun with makeup again.

3) Hair adornment

Looking for a way to update your hairstyle for 2017, but can’t be bothered with the time and expense of a ritzy chop or colour change? No problem, because it was all about hair adornment instead over on the SS17 runways. Whether it was a black Alice band at Erdem or Anna Sui, a playful barrette at Ashley Williams, or a bow to top off a messy ponytail at Monique Lhuillier — the runways showed no shortage of embellished inspiration this season. And as far as a means for mixing things up, we’re super into the ease and playfulness of this particular approach to hair.
